We were in Setapak yesterday and saw a cendol stall that had people queuing for it. Curiosity got the best of us so we put aside what we were supposed to do and joined the queue to check it out.
We also noticed that the majority of the customers are students who are staying in the many condominiums nearby.
While waiting, I had a chat with the boss (Kanul) and found that he actually took over his father’s business not too long ago.
Although he has been selling cendol at the current location for only a month, he already managed to build a large base of customers. Because of that, his cendol usually sells out within 3 to 4 hours – earlier if the weather is hot.
All the ingredients Kanul uses for his cendol are homemade except for the sweet corn which is canned. Besides having excellent customer service, he is also not stingy with the toppings.
For RM3, you receive a huge packet filled with full spoonfuls of sweet corn, red bean, pulut, three scoops of gula melaka and generous amount of cendol. If you are taking away for later consumption, ask for ‘ikat mati’. Otherwise, ask for ‘ikat tepi’ so you can drink it immediately.
If you ask me, I think his cendol is delicious. It had a right balance of gula melaka and santan for a rich, sweet and refreshing flavor. The texture of the shaved ice was light and fine so you rarely get those annoying bits when taking a sip. No wonder he is gaining popularity with the local community so quickly.
Before we left, I asked Kanul what are his next plans. His answer was to be able to sell rojak as well to complement his business. I wish him and the other cendol men out there all the very best for the future.
