My most expensive cendol ever RM271.20 @ Bukit Tengah, Penang

$

Yup you seen it right, it’s RM271.20 for a bowl of cendol. It was my most expensive cendol ever and I have only myself to blame. After placing my order and while walking towards my seat in the food court behind the cendol stall, my camera bag slipped off my shoulder and dropped on the cement floor.
Although I carried my bag really low about two feet from the ground, the impact was strong enough to damage my 50mm lens so badly it was rendered useless – partly thanks to the plastic build. Oh well, lesson learnt, gotta put more padding in my cheapo camera bag and carry it with more care.

bkt-tengah-cendol

I have heard many good stuff about this cendol stall operated by an Indian family just opposite Peng Bin primary school at Bukit Tengah. Some even commented that it’s so good it’s better than the famous one at Penang Road, which in my opinion is already very awesome. So, I just gotta give it a try and verify the claims myself.
Well, the good thing about the cendol was the bigger portion and a lot of the green starch ‘noodles’ was given. Other than that it was pretty normal tasting and personally, I feel it wasn’t even comparable to Penang Road’s.
And if you noticed, the green ‘noodles’ was fatter and shorter with a pretty bad texture too – being stiff and taste mushy when the teeth sunk in. The desired jelly feeling just wasn’t there.

cendol-stall

If you were a Peng Bin student then you would know about this cendol stall. For RM1.20 a bowl I know shouldn’t be expecting too much but I had high hopes due to the many recommendations. Takeaways cost extra RM0.30 for each packet. Map via Wikimapia
In case you are wondering, I went and buy a 50mm replacement the next day in Penang, which cost me RM270. Luckily the old one had served me at least a year before retiring permanently so I was not that heartache lol.

RM1.30 Cendol Opposite Taman Bahagia LRT Station

Damn the weather nowadays is killing me. Thanks to the haze the daytime doesn’t feel like daytime anymore because the sunlight is freaking blocked and smoke is all I see! Even when it rains it only lasts for a few minutes wtf.
Lucky for us there’s cheap and body cooling desserts like ais kacang and cendol easily available – whether in a coffee shop, food court or by the road side. But, finding a tasty one remains as the main challenge.

taman-bahagia-cendol

I was hunting for good cendol around Subang Jaya and the stall opposite Taman Bahagia LRT station had quite a few recommendations online. Realizing my office is not exactly too far from it, I decided to drop by one day after lunch.
I was expecting to see a proper stall but it was actually a mobile stall operating using a van. Setup beside a housing area’s playground, it’s very easy to locate – just use the LRT as the landmark.

cendol-taman-bahagia

The cendol is dirt cheap here, RM1.30 a bowl. It is one of the better tasting cendol I have had so far since coming to KL (you won’t believe the level of crappiness in the worst ever cendol I had not long ago. So this deserves a somewhat good rating based on the worst one, relatively)
At least it was pretty authentic and had the cendol taste. The only complaint I have is on the shaved ice, it wasn’t fine enough and felt chunky.

cendol-van

But that’s understandable since they are still using the traditional ice shaver. It definitely won’t be able to produce the perfectly textured shaved ice from those electric ice shavers.

cendol-preparation

Generous amount of santan and cendol being poured over the shaved ice.

cendol-big

cendol-3

For RM1.30, not much ingredients can be expected. The ice tends to melt really fast so there’s really no time to enjoy it slow and steady.

rojak

My friend ordered the rojak and said it was so-so at best.

cendol-van

Since discovering this cendol, we always drop by for a bowl or two whenever we can. But not because it’s that great. To be honest it loses by miles if compared to Penang Road Teochew Cendol.
The environment, which is surrounded by trees and always breezy is the main reason we go there. It’s the perfect oasis to enjoy cooling cendol in a scorching afternoon. Believe it or not, we feel cooler being here than being in a shaded food court!

Penang Road Famous Cendol and Ais Kacang @ Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth

Was back in Penang a few days ago during the Hari Raya break. It has been a loooooooooong time since I last posted anything on Penang food so here goes. Despite Bukit Mertajam being a lot nearer to Butterworth than Penang Island, the only food I posted before in Butterworth is Sweet Paradise (Chao Quan) Dim Sum lol.
So I did a research on Butterworth’s food and found that it is actually quite a food paradise itself. If you stay in Butterworth basically there’s no need to travel anywhere else for food. At Jalan Raja Uda alone you have hawker stalls and restaurants lined up on both sides of the road, which will take you a really long time to try all of them.

penang-road-famous-ais-kaca

While browsing Wikimapia on Jalan Raja Uda, a small box attracted my attention. It was labeled as “Butterworth Red Bean Ice” in Chinese, which is actually Ice Kacang. The description says it is the best Ice Kacang @ RM2.70 with lots of fresh ingredients, and waiting time is long too because of the number of customers.
Roughly remembering the stall as somewhere before a photo shop along Jalan Raja Uda (it’s just a straight road), I managed to locate the stall easily thanks to the crowd that made it even more obvious. Little did I know that this Ais Kacang stall is actually a branch of the Penang Road Famous Cendol and Ais Kacang, I was totally clueless about this, lol fail. No wonder it is so popular.

ais-kacang

After waiting 10 minutes for a seat, I had to wait another 20 minutes for my Ais Kacang to arrive. Firstly, it looked nothing like the one I had at Penang Road because it had a lot of peanuts and didn’t have those small green jelly balls.
That aside, I have to say they really did not skimp on the ingredients as generous amount of peanuts, red beans, grass jelly, sweet corn and atapchi were given. For me it’s super valuable. There’s simply no way you can purchase a bowl of Ais Kacang laden with so much toppings for only RM3.50 in KL.

ice-kacang

The soft shaved ice, sweet tasting with a hint of refreshing Sarsi flavor was a perfect treat in the hot afternoon. Every mouthful taken is met with interesting textures of the crunchy peanuts, tender-soft red beans, smooth grass jelly and chewy atapchi. Just great.

raja-uda-ais-kacang

The man responsible for manning the ice shaver also takes orders and remembers them. I watched him doing his work and I have concluded that at least 3 bowls/packets of Ais Kacang or Cendol can be prepared in a minute.
His partner is an efficient worker as well, having to pour like 5 to 6 types of syrups into the shaved ice, then place the toppings. Watching them handled and prepared the onslaughting orders made my wait a lot more bearable. lol it somehow felt like watching a show.

penang-road-ais-kacang

In short, awesome Ais Kacang and I loved it. Only the waiting time is a deterrent. And I felt it was better than the one at Penang Road too, not sure about the Cendol though. Knowing this Cendol and Ais Kacang stall’s existence is good news for me because I don’t have to drive across the bridge to get a bowl of nice Ais Kacang now. Butterworth also got!
My next quest is to find out the other branch in Chai Leng Park as stated in its signboard. But I guess that quest can only be completed next year, as I will be relocating to Singapore soon for work purpose (sigh).

Direction: Drive along Jalan Raja Uda and look for ‘Wo Lai Yeh’ dried meat, the Ais Kacang stall is directly opposite across the road. Alternatively, use Raja Uda’s Pizza Hut/New Town Kopitiam as reference. If Pizza Hut/New Town Kopitiam is on your right, then the Ais Kacang stall would be on your left about 1km down the road. Lookout for road side the hawker stalls.

BM Best Cendol @ Medan Selera Jalan Danby, Bukit Mertajam

First, just let me say that Bukit Mertajam has never been famous for cendol. My hometown has some great food like Yam Rice, Duck Egg Char Koay Teow, Laksa, Char Koay Teow, Wantan Mee, Mee Goreng, Koay Teow Soup, Dry Prawn Noodle, Curry Mee, Nasi Lemak and so on. But cendol is definitely out of the list.

cendol-bm-best

But if you are ever in Bukit Mertajam and looking for a cheap and refreshing bowl of cendol, then you must give BM Best Cendol a try. It is located near the town’s wet market along Danby Street, just behind KFC.
BM Best Cendol has been selling ever since I could remember and has become one of BM’s most historical eateries. I can’t remember the exact price for each bowl but if I am not mistaken it’s in the region of RM1 to RM1.50. To be honest while it is quite nice (above average), it pales considerably if compared to the ones found in the island namely Penang Road’s Teo Chew Cendol.
bm-cendol-jalan-danby

This is the original stall at Medan Selera Jalan Danby – a small hawker center selling mostly Malay food. The stall looks new and clean compared to the hawker center because it had a face lift a few years back. After that they also managed to occupy a proper shop that is located diagonally opposite them.

bm-best-cendol

This is the new (well not really new but latest) branch of BM Best Cendol. If people didn’t know, they would think that a business rivalry is going on between the shop and the stall. But I have checked with them, they are indeed the same so it’s all fine lol.

bm-best-cendol-stall

But for nostalgia’s sake, I prefer to have my cendol in the old stall even though the place is older and dirtier. I still can remember the days I would cycle or even walk here to take away a few packets bach home as desserts after dinner. That time, each pack only cost like thirty cents. Before discovering Penang Road’s cendol, I used to think it’s the best cendol in the world.

cendol

Seeing this photo reminds me a lot of my hometown. Sigh, I wish I could go home soon. GPS Coordinates: N5 21.817 E100 27.679 (food court), N5 21.801 E100 27.681 (restaurant)

Limapulo: Baba Can Cook @ The Row, Jalan Doraisamy

Limapulo: Baba Can Cook is well-known for serving one of the best Nyonya Laksa in KL. As a Nyonya Laksa fan it’s only natural I would want to give it a try.

Baba Can Cook Nyonya Restaurant

Baba Can Cook Limapulo KL

Located at the The Row, the interior of Limapulo is a wonderland for Instagram enthusiasts, as it’s dotted with plenty of old school and hipsterish knick knacks, furniture and posters.
However, the ambiance was spoilt by unnecessary blasting of the Wiggle song by one of the foreign workers. Worse still, it’s played on loop. I lost count on how many times we heard the word ‘butt’ during the meal.

Limapulo Mee Hoon Siam

Unfortunately, I did not get to try the Nyonya Laksa I came for because it’s only available on certain days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Nyonya Chicken Curry was sold out too before dinner service starts. From that moment on, I knew the meal was not going to be a great one.
In desperation we asked for their Mee Siam @ RM9.90, which was supposed to be served for lunch. Luckily (finally some luck!) there were still some left and it turned out to be the dish we enjoyed the most in that rainy night.

Limapulo Cucur Udang

This might be harsh but I think the acclaimed Cucur Udang @ RM9.90 was a miserable fail. Biting into the prawn fritters felt like biting into a clump of soggy and mushy flour. The sauce was more sweet than spicy and lacked a zing. I think any random Malay warung out there could easily churn out a better rendition of this simple dish.

Limapulo Telur Cincaluk

To go with rice, we ordered a Telur Cincaluk @ RM12 – normal tasting in a good way.

Limapulo Kangkung Belacan

Fried Kangkung Sambal Belacan – delicious but we felt ripped off by the price vs portion. For RM15 they could at least throw in a seafood or two. After all, isn’t Kangkung a cheap vegetable as confirmed by our dear Prime Minister?

Limapulo Ayam Rempah

For extra 2 bucks you could get the Ayam Rempah @ RM17 instead. It doesn’t take a mathematics genius to figure out that this would be a way better bang for your buck.

Limapulo ABC Cendol

Desserts were quite a let down too considering the cendol worms tasted frozen and the shaved ice had an annoying coarse texture which I personally did not enjoy. A shame because they pretty much nailed the rest. Cendol is priced at RM3.50 while the ABC is RM4.50.

Limapulo Baba Can Cook KL

Limapulo Nyonya Mural

Overall it was only a so-so experience at best. The dinner came to a total of RM81.20 for a few seemingly simple dishes that we really felt like we overpaid for. For the same spent, we could have a 4 to 5 course dinner at a normal Chinese restaurant.
I know it’s unfair to compare like that, but that’s a good indication of the value of the food at Limapulo. I might return again for the Nyonya Laksa to satisfy my curiosity, but maybe that’s about it.

Poppo Kanteen Restaurant – Nasi So Lemak! @ Cheras

Poppo Kanteen is a cheerful restaurant that serves local delicacies with a few Asian-Fusion dishes thrown into the mix. The backstory was that Poppo used to be a canteen operator at a school in Batu Pahat, so her mission is to provide new food choices for the students and teachers. Because of that, there is a back-to-school vibe featuring traditional metal dishes and a menu that takes the shape of a ‘buku latihan’.

Poppo Kanteen Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah

You will definitely be spoilt for choices here, as there are more than 200 food and drink items in the menu. But one thing Poppo is proud of, it has got to be their nasi lemak.
It’s available with fried chicken, chicken curry, mutton curry, beef rendang and a couple of other meat and seafood dishes. Whichever you choose, it will never cost more than RM10 and so the price is reasonable.
If you pay enough attention, you will notice that every single side dish in Poppo’s nasi lemak has a unique twist. For example, the hard boiled egg is fried in a light coating of panko, crispy but not hard ikan bilis, extra smooth sambal and even the peanuts are crunchier than usual. As for the fried chicken, it’s flavorful from the inside out since it’s pounded before being marinated.

Poppo Kanteen Spicy Fried Spaghetti

Spicy Fried Spaghetti @ RM9.50. The overall flavor was similar to Kung Pao and does not taste as spicy as it looks. Personally I’d like it more if it had a bigger punch of heat. But I guess you can’t please everyone.

Roti Boom Ice Cream

Roti Boom is a crowd favorite and it’s easy to see why. It’s entirely crispy, fluffy with the right amount of sweetness without being cloying. Top it off with a topping of your choice and it might very well be one of the best Roti Boom you ever have. Highly recommended.

Poppo Kanteen Tofu Sumbat

Some snacks for sharing include the Tofu Sumbat @ RM4.90 – cheap and enjoyably crunchy.

Poppo Kanteen Crispy Tofu

Poppo Crispy Tofu @ RM5.90 with their secret homemade sauce that’s light, citrusy and refreshing.

Poppo Kanteen Garlic Bread Kaya

Poppo Kanteen Cheese Toast

Poppo offers a wide variety of toasts. The two that we tried – Garlic Bread Kaya @ 3.50 and Cheese Toast @ RM3.90 were equally good but I am more impressed with the fact that they were perfectly toasted without any charred spots at the bottom.

Poppo Kanteen Korean Fried Chicken

This was unexpected but Korean Fried Chicken is also on the menu. Unbelievably crunchy and the savory sauce had a nice balance of sweetness and richness to it.

Poppo Kanteen Cendol

Dessert wise, the cendol @ RM4.90 is a must try. Loaded with fresh toppings (the green cendol worms are squiggly soft, not frozen) and drizzled in premium imported palm sugar, I can’t find anything to fault with this icy treat. In fact, this will be on my list of the best cendol in KL.

Poppo Kanteen Ais Kacang ABC

ABC @ RM7.50 on the other hand feels like an upgraded version of the cendol. Both are delicious in their own ways, but I prefer the cendol better.

Poppo Kanteen Ginger Ice

For something out of the norm, try the Ginger Ice @ RM6.90 – made with pure ginger juice that packs a strong pungent and spicy kick. Another drink worth the mention is Teh Tarik Butter, it was extraordinarily smooth and creamy, and more importantly does not leave a ‘siap-siap’ (astringent) aftertaste.

Poppo Kanteen Cheras

It is also worth mentioning that Poppo Kanteen was renovated and equipped with recycled materials for that unique atmosphere that does not pander to a certain age group. We hung out here for about three hours and we noticed that their customers come from all walk of life – but especially popular with families.

Kabir’s Cendol & Rojak @ Bandar Sri Damansara

In Bandar Sri Damasara, there’s a stretch of road dotted with food stalls offering cheap and delicious eats. One of them is Kabir’s Cendol and Rojak which is known to serve one of the best cendol and ais kacang in town.

Kabir's Cendol and Rojak Stall Bandar Sri Damansara

The stall is a simple set up with a couple of tables and chairs. Although the place looks run down, I believe it’s relatively clean because we did not spot a single fly all the time we were there.

Kabir's ABC Stall Bandar Sri Damansara

Kabir’s Cendol and Rojak appears to be a family run business, and the man who prepares the icy delights can speak fluent English as well. Besides rojak, mee goreng, maggi goreng and maggi soup are some of the other dishes you can have here.

Kabir's ABC

Kabir’s ABC is priced only at RM2.40 and it comes in a towering portion with satisfying amount of toppings. It’s drizzled with just enough syrup and condensend milk for a sweet and refreshing taste – yet far from cloying. Although the shaved ice was not as fine as I wished to be, it still proved to be an enjoyable treat.

Kabir's Cendol Bandar Sri Damansara

His cendol is slightly cheaper @ RM2 per bowl. Despite being 10 to 20 cents more expensive than those sold elsewhere, the price is worth paying for because you get a whole lot more toppings. Not to mention they are of better quality too.
As you can see he does not stinge on the amount of sweet corn, and the rest like cendol and red beans taste soft and fresh as well – definitely not those frozen and reused. Taste wise the sweetness is spot on and nicely complemented by the aromatic and creamy coconut milk.

Kabir's Mee Goreng Bandar Sri Damansara

We were not in the mood for rojak so we had the Mee Goreng. It was fried together with the rojak gravy so it produces a different (better) flavor than those you get at normal mamak restaurants. For RM4 only, there’s simply nothing we could complain about it.

Kabir's Cendol and Rojak Banner

To look for Kabir’s stall, you can use Restoran Woh as a landmark, as the food stalls are all located diagonally opposite across the road.

Durian Cendol @ Rojak & Cendol Shah Alam, Seksyen 24 Shah Alam

We are not at the peak season of durian yet, but the fever for the King of the Fruits is hotter more than ever now. Durian cendol is not a new thing in Malaysia but a rojak & cendol stall in Shah Alam decided to take it it further by adding real and fresh durian fruits (never frozen) in their cendol. So essentially it’s not durian cendol. Instead, it’s durian in cendol.

Durian Cendol Seksyen 24 Shah Alam
Cendol Menu Shah Alam
Durian waiting to be opened for Cendol Shah Alam

The whole idea is the brainchild of Mohd Hafez Hamed, who decided to include durian into his already extensive range of cendol flavors. If you don’t know yet, he offers more than a hundred types of cendol at his humble stall!

Arranging Durian for Cendol

Peeled Durian Fruit for Cendol Shah Alam
Golden Thai Durian for Cendol

Since local durians are not that matured yet, he’s now using ‘Tembaga Chinni‘ from Thailand, known for its golden creamy flesh and sweet flavor. Rest assured though, that when the Musang King and D24 durians start to flood the local market, you’d be able to see them on the menu as well.

Cendol Durian Seksyen 24 Shah Alam

The prices for his durian cendol fluctuates based on the pricing of his durian stock which he gets on a daily basis. From what I was told, he uses up to 300kg of durian a day, so that’s 6 tonnes every month.
During our visit, a bowl could be RM10 or RM12, the difference is the amount of durian that goes into it. If you love durian, then an extra RM2 is worth paying for because the difference is quite significant.

Serving Durian Cendol Shah Alam

After placing your order at the counter and paying for it, you will be assigned a number. Then the staff will deliver your orders by shouting out your number. Simply grab his attention when you hear your number being called out.

Cendol with Durian Shah Alam

Taste wise, I’d say that cendol is already good on its own. It has pretty much everything you want in it – decent Gula Melaka flavor, fresh cendol ‘worms’ with a rich coconut milk aroma. So the durian would be just icing on the cake.
I used to sell durians so I am quite nitpicky when it comes to them. For a Thai durian, the quality is great and I could tell that they are more “natural” in the sense that they don’t appear to be ripened artificially with chemicals.
And of course local durians such as Musang King/D24/Red Prawn will triumph the ‘Tembaga Chinni’ on any day – so you could only expect the cendol to taste even better when they start dropping in large quantities.

Rojak & Cendol Shah Alam Queue

Lastly, my advice to you is to arrive by 5.30pm if you don’t want to end up queing for hours. This was how the queue looked like before I left. FYI they are open tomorrow (2nd May 2016) even though it’s their usual off day.

Nyonya Cendol House (Food Truck) @ Laman Rimbunan, Kepong

While most modern food trucks focus on Western dishes, Nyonya Cendol House in Kepong decided to serve traditional local dessert instead – cendol.

Kepong Traditional Cendol Food Truck

What makes the cendol here special is that they also serve it with real fruit toppings like durian, mango, jackfruit and etc. You can still get the original with red beans but that would pretty much defeat the purpose of coming here.

Traditional Mango Cendol Kepong

We tried the mango cendol @ RM6 first to gauge how good it was, and we were not a bit disappointed. The cendol ‘worms’ are really fresh, soft and wriggly with a nice pandan fragrance.
If you pay attention to how the cendol is prepared, you will notice the generous amount of coconut milk and gula melaka they put into it. Despite that, it’s not cloying and doesn’t overwhelm your palate. So you can still taste the fruit’s natural sweetness and flavor.

Mango Cendol Kepong

Also, they must have a penchant for selecting good fruits, as the mango was fully ripe, incredibly sweet and juicy.

D24 Durian Traditional Cendol

Happy with what we had, we proceeded to order the durian cendol too. For RM8, you get a chunk of real D24 frozen durian flesh and not those artificial or syrupy ones. Verdict? It was delicious and even better than what we had in Shah Alam.

For those who want to give this unique cendol a try, simply look for Public Bank in Kepong as they are parked right next to it. After that you can walk over to Moossy Mobile Cafe for their coffee made with beans harvested from Chiang Mai highlands. Both trucks are just a stone’s throw away from each other.

Nyonya Cendol Cafe (Best Cendol in KL) @ Summit Subang USJ

If you love Nyonya Cendol, you should make your way to Summit Subang USJ as quickly as you can. There’s a quaint cafe at the lower ground floor going by the name of Nyonya Cendol Cafe which serves possibly the best cendol in Klang Valley.
I happen to know about this place through Benson, a close friend of mine who is also a fan of Aunty Koh’s cendol. Ever since he found out about this cendol he had been pestering me to try it for the longest time.

Best Nyonya Cendol KL

What makes the Nyonya cendol here (RM4.30) so good is that they insist on using fresh ingredients that are prepared daily. But what really sets this cendol a class apart is their santan, it’s extra thick and creamy with the most wonderful aroma. The cendol ‘worms’ are thicker and longer than usual too, expertly made with a jelly-like texture and do not taste mushy at all.
When it comes to icy desserts like ABC and cendol, you’d notice that I am very particular about the ice. If it’s lumpy it’s usually an instant fail. For me, a good cendol/ABC must have fine and powdery ice flakes that melts on your tongue. With that in mind, I am glad to say that the shaved ice here passes my test. That means at least someone is taking effort to sharpen the ice shaver’s blades here.

Nyonya Cendol Summit USJ

You can also request for fruit toppings like durian and nangka (as shown above for extra RM2.20) to be added on your cendol. I don’t really recommend it though, not because they taste bad or anything, but because the portion is quite small. If that does’t bother you then then by all means go ahead.

Nyonya Cendol Cafe ABC

We also tried the ABC with longan @ RM7.20. It was enjoyable alright, there’s no doubt about that.

USJ Summit Homemade Nyonya Cendol

Overall, I’d rate the cendol here fantastic and I have to say Benson’s recommendation was spot on. Finally, a cendol as good as Aunty Koh’s can be had in KL without having to go all the way to Melaka.

Nyonya Cendol Cafe Summit USJ

Lastly, for your information, Nyonya Cendol Cafe and Old Seremban Station kopitiam just opposite are owned by the same boss. Therefore, you can expect the same tasting cendol at both places. However, I was told that the shaved ice churned out Old Seremban Station is not as refined.

Seremban Station Hainan Coffee @ Equine Park, Seri Kembangan

I hardly step into kopitiam chains anymore. They have become more of a meeting place for business or friends. But I was so impressed by the cendol at Nyonya Cendol Cafe that I had to drop by their sister restaurant in Equine Park. It’s called Seremban Station Hainan Coffee and the premise was occupied by Hailam Kopitiam previously.

Seremban Station Prawn Mee

First impression: the menu is vast and features close to a hundred dishes to choose from. Besides an extensive selection of local delicacies you will also find a range of Asian, Western and Hainanese cuisine. For first timers, the chef recommended menu might be a better place to start.
The Penang Prawn Mee @ RM8.90 is not bad at all considering it’s pork free. From what we were told, the noodle is cooked to order with their homemade prawn paste mixed with chicken stock. The resulting broth is dark red broth, rich yet smooth with a strong flavor leaning towards spicy.

Seremban Station Sambal Seafood Fried Rice

Aromatic, spicy enough and surprisingly even carried sufficient ‘wok hei’ with it, the Sambal Seafood Fried Rice @ RM12.50 is definitely worth the try. Just add a sunny side up and extra of sambal on the side and it’d be perfect.

Seremban Station Mee Goreng Mamak

The SS Mamak Mee Goreng @ RM9.50 didn’t taste quite as expected but in a good way. I like that they didn’t use the usual yellow mee so it was devoid of any ‘alkaline’ taste. Although tasty, it was a tad greasy than it needed to be – perhaps due to the amount of sauce used.

Seremban Station Hainan Chicken Chop

I can’t help but feel that the Hainanese Chicken Chop @ RM13.90 is a steal. The portion is so large (whole chicken thigh) that you could share it with someone else. Not to mention the chicken was fresh, tender and juicy too. If you want value for money, this is the dish to order.

Seremban Station Nyonya Cendol

And of course Nyonya Cendol @ RM4.90 is on the menu. However, it had more gula melaka and less (or not as thick) coconut milk so it tasted a bit different compared to the one we had in Summit USJ. Regardless, the cendol was still awesome and better than any other I have had in KL.

Do you know that Lonely Planet recently listed Ipoh as one of the best Asian destinations to visit in 2016? It’s high time that Ipoh finally gets the recognition it truly deserves. Eating is probably the best activity to do in the city – and boy there are plenty of Ipoh food to eat.
Bean sprout chicken rice, ‘kai see hor fun’, egg tarts, white coffee, hakka mee, curry mee, ABC, caramel custard, yong tau fu and the list goes on.
If you are visiting Ipoh for a ‘makan trip’ soon, I hope you are going with an empty stomach. Here’s a list of Ipoh food consisting 20 must-try food stalls, coffee shops and restaurants to get you started.

Hong Kee Confectionery Egg Tarts Ipoh Food
Hong Kee Biscuit Stall Ipoh - Ipoh Food

Hong Kee makes one of the best egg tarts in town – known for having a crust with 48 crispy layers. It’s a family run business and they get up as early as 3am to bake their pastries and cakes which are delivered fresh to their stall in Weng Seng coffee shop.
Despite the immense popularity they enjoy, they remain down to earth and friendly towards their loyal customers who have supported them throughout these 40 years. So it’s no wonder they are able to sell more than 1000 pieces/day of egg tarts during weekends and public holidays.
Other specialties to try: Swiss Roll and Sachima (萨其马). Come as early as possible to avoid disappointments.

FOOK KEE FRIED NOODLES 福记炒粉

Fook Kee Fried Noodle Kampung Simee

Fook Kee Fried Noodle Stall - Ipoh Food
Restoran Yu Yee Kampung Simee

Kampung Simee is a Chinese village dotted with eateries and bakeries. Fook Kee is a hidden gem specializing in fried noodles cooked with prawn stock.
Waiting time could reach 45 minutes or more during peak hours (frequented by locals) so my suggestion is to place your order, then wander off to the nearby bakeries to shop for biscuits or enjoy a bowl of ABC at Fei Ma’s stall first. By the time you return, your fried noodles should be ready within minutes.

RESTORAN NASI KANDAR AYAM MERAH (NASI GANJA)

Address: Yong Suan Coffee Shop, 2, Jalan Yang Kalsom, 30250 Ipoh
Business hours: 9.30am – 6pm. Tel: 05-254 4314

Nasi Kandar Yong Suan Ipoh
Nasi Ganja Yong Suan Ipoh
Yong Suan Nasi Kandar Coffee Shop Ipoh

Also known as ‘nasi ganja’ due to its addictiveness, the nasi kandar stall operating from Yong Suan coffee shop is inarguably the most popular in Ipoh. Don’t be put off by the long queue of customers, as they are only taking away.
For those who are planning to eat in, proceed to take a seat and you can order from the friendly waiters directly. Just tell them what dishes you fancy – either served separately or on your rice flooded with a mix of curry gravies. I prefer the latter.
To give you an idea of their reasonable pricing, it’s RM16 for a plate with ayam goreng merah, fish curry, squid curry, salted egg, okra and a dollop of their signature mint chutney.

MING COURT HONG KONG TIM SUM 明阁香港点心

Address: 32, 34, 36, Jalan Leong Sin Nam, 30300 Ipoh

Xin Quan Fang, fondly known as ‘ma ta liu curry mee’ to locals churns out some of the best Hainanese curry mee and bean sprouts in town. Get all the side dishes which include a combination of roast pork, prawns, char siew, stewed pork served in a separate bowl. They tend to sell out earlier than the official closing time, so morning is the best time to drop by.

Choong Kee Zhong Kei Yong Tau Fu Ipoh

Also known as ‘Dai Shu Keok’ yong tau fu, Choong Kee operates like a mini factory constantly churning out freshly fried items which you can enjoy with koay teow soup or asam laksa. Fried turnip is a must-try here, as you can’t find it easily at other yong tau fu stalls outside Ipoh.

THEAN CHUN COFFEE SHOP 天津茶室

‘Halls of Mirros’ is another name for Thean Chun – coined after the large mirrors hanging on the coffee shop’s wall. Their staple offerings you shouldn’t miss include caramel custard, chee cheong fun, ‘kai see hor fun’ and pork satay – the last being a rare sight in Ipoh nowadays.

Mixed Fruits ABC Tong Sui Kai Ipoh - Ipoh Food

One of the most happening eating places in Ipoh after the sun sets. ‘Tong Sui Kai‘ is lined with dozens of food stalls mostly selling desserts (hence the name), snacks like rojak, boiled cockles and various noodles.
Every stall has their own unique rendition and presentation of Ipoh’s famed mixed fruits ABC, so there’s always a reason to revisit this bustling street.

FAMOUS HAKKA MEE 客家面

Address: Paris Coffee Shop, 164, Jalan Sultan Iskandar (Hugh Low Street), 30000 Ipoh
Business hours: 7.30am – 12pm

Hugh Street Hakka Mee Ipoh

Besides minced meat, yong tau fu is also served in the Hakka Mee here – almost like a combo meal. One particular yong tau fu that stood out was the fried meat balls that have a hint of salted fish. Their homemade chilli sauce is delicious as well and improves the overall taste of the noodle.

LOKE WOOI KEE COFFEE SHOP 乐会居茶室

Address: No 28, Jalan Mustapha Al-Bakri, 30300 Ipoh
Business hours: 7am – 3pm

Hor Hee Loke Woi Kee Ipoh

Loke Woi Kee Coffee Shop Ipoh

Hor Hee‘ is a Teochew noodle soup served with a mix of fish cakes, fish balls and fish dumplings. A dash of fried onion oil is added to the thick and flavorful soup to give it extra fragrance and aroma. It is a fast disappearing food in Ipoh – so you need to try it before it’s gone.
Loke Woi Kee coffee shop is your best (and most convenient) bet to enjoy this noodle. Even if you are not interested in having Hor Hee, the fruit rojak and ‘kai see sha hor fun’ here are delicious enough to make your visit worthwhile.

TAI SOO IPOH FAMOUS NO.1 DESSERT

Address: 24, Jalan Raja Musa Aziz, 30000 Ipoh
Business hours: 10.30am – 6pm, usually closed on Wednesdays

Tai Soo Ais Kacang Ipoh

Famous Tai Soo Ais Kacang Ipoh
Ipoh Famous Tai Soo Ais Kacang

A perfect spot for tea break, Tai Soo is famous for a couple of things: Ais Kacang (ABC), tau fu fah (melt in your mouth soft) and soya bean milk.
Their tau fu fah can be ordered with different toppings like cendol, glass jelly and red beans. It is also recommended that you buy a bottle or two of their soya bean milk to bring home – it’s rich and absolutely delicious.

IPOH STADIUM FOOD COURT (MEDAN SELERA STADIUM)

Address: Kompleks Sukan Ipoh, 31400 Ipoh
Business hours: 6pm – midnight

Char Koay Teow Wantan Mee Ipoh

Ipoh Stadium Food Court Wan Ton Mee
Ipoh Stadium Food Court Medan Selera

After most of the coffee shops in town have closed, locals throng this food court adjacent to the stadium for dinner and supper.
Traditional Ipoh-style wan ton mee and smoky char koay teow are clearly the favorites here, as you can see them present on almost every table.
For drinks, try out the refreshing herbal drink (next to wan ton mee stal) and freshly blended fruit juices from Frankie’s stall on the far right.

ONN KEE / LOU WONG BEAN SPROUT CHICKEN

Address: Lou Wong 老黄芽菜鸡沙河粉 / Onn Kee 安记芽菜鸡沙河粉, Jalan Yau Tet Shin
Business hours: lunch and dinner till late

Ipoh Chicken Rice

Ipoh chicken rice lou wong onn kee
Restoran Tauge Ayam Ong Kee Ipoh
Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong Ipoh

Probably what Ipoh is most famous for, beansprout chicken (nga choy kai) is commonly available – enjoyed either with rice or flat noodle. Side dishes are usually pork meat balls and stewed chicken feet. Onn Kee and Lou Wong are two of the oldest shops and both enjoy the same reputation for serving deliciously tender poached chicken.
My suggestion? Try both by ordering a quarter chicken at each restaurant to decide which suits your taste the best. But no matter which you end up eating at, it’s quite impossible for the meal to go wrong. Best of all, you can count both of them to be open for most of the time.

COWAN STREET AYAM TAUGE & KOITIAU 高温街芽菜鸡沙河粉

Address: 44, Jalan Raja Ekram, 30300 Ipoh
Business hours: Wed – Sun (7pm onwards). Tel: 012 5203 322 (Ah Meng)

Chicken Hor Fun Cowan Street Ipoh

Cowan Street Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun
Cowan Street Ayam Tauge Koitiau

If Lou Wong and Onn Kee are the to-go places for beansprout chicken rice, then Cowan Street’s Ayam Tauge & Koitiau would be the top choice for beansprout chicken hor fun.
Ordering is quick and simple. Just tell the number of portions and say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the side dishes such as the gizzards and chicken feet (highly recommended) when asked. The poached chicken here is out-of-this-world tender and even the lean breast meat is nice and juicy.

DEEN CT CORNER CENDOL

Address: 21B, Jalan Mustapha Al Bakri, 30300 Ipoh
Business hours: 11.30am – 6.30pm, closed on Fridays. Tel: 016-535 0351

Deen CT Corner Cendol - Ipoh Food

Deen CT Cendol Ipoh

Located just a stone’s throw away from Loke Wooi Kee and Tai Soo, Deen CT Corner serves an amazing bowl of cendol with the right balance of flavors.
Being able to customize your cendol is a plus here, as you can have it with any toppings of your choice – such as red beans only, or red beans with sweet corn. For a more filling experience, opt for the ‘pulut’ version which adds a spoonful of glutinous rice to keep you satiated longer.

NAM HEONG / NAM CHAU / SUN YUAN FOONG

Address: Nam Heong 南香 – 2, Jalan Bandar Timah / Nam Chau 南州 – 54, Jalan Bandar Timah / Sun Yuan Foong 新源丰 – 17, Jalan Bandar Timah
Business hours: 6am – 5pm

Nam Chau White Coffee Ipoh

Fancy a cup of white coffee? Your options are endless in Ipoh. To maximize your time, drop by Jalan Bandar Timah where you will find a couple of coffee shops each serving up their own unique blend of white coffee brewed to perfection. Nam Heong, Nam Chau and Sun Yuan Foong are located within walking distance from each other and all of them are great in their own ways.
But if you only have limited time or stomach space, decision should be based on the food you want to eat. If you are hankering for egg tarts, go to Nam Heong. For toasts, you won’t go wrong at Sun Yuan Foong while Nam Chau is great for noodles like dry curry mee.

FEI MA MIXED FRUITS ABC 肥妈雪水档

Address: 224, Lebuh Raya 3, Kg Simee, Ipoh
Business hours: 1pm – 5pm, closed on Tuedays and Fridays

Ipoh Mixed Fruits Ice Dessert

Fei Ma Shaving Ice Dessert
Fei Ma Ais Kacang Stall

Fei Ma’s dessert stall is another hidden gem in Kampung Simee. If you had to leave Ipoh by evening which means you don’t get to eat at Tong Sui Kai, then this is the place to be since it’s open from lunch onward.
After compacting the shaved ice into shape by hand, Fei Ma starts garnishing each bowl with fruits (fresh, pickled and canned), a myriad of syrups, cendol, peanuts and jelly followed by a bath of sugar water.
Looking at the generous amount of fruits and tedious work that go into a bowl like this, it’s hard to believe that it costs only RM4.80. The moment you take a sip of the melted ice, you will know it’s truly something special. The combination of flavors from plum, lime and lemon makes this a refreshing treat that you can enjoy guilt-free.

KAFE YOON WAH 元华饮食阁雪花啤酒

Address: 7, Jalan Bijih Timah, 30000 Ipoh
Business hours: 6pm till midnight. Tel: 012-512 9980

Yoon Wah Snow Beer Restaurant Ipoh

Yoon Wah Cafe Snow Beer Ipoh

If you are looking for a place to enjoy a (grown up) drink like the locals do, then head to Kafe Yoon Wah for snow beer. Notice the slushie-like content in the mug? Those are actually foam that becomes crystallized when come into contact with a frozen glass.
Yoon Wah is also an ideal place for dinner and they serve a good range of Chinese seafood and meat dishes to go along with the drinks.

THE DECK GASTRO BAR / YUK SOU HIN 玉寿轩

Address: WEIL Hotel, 292, Jalan Sultan Idris Shah, 30000 Ipoh

Ipoh is not all about street food. Some of the most exquisite Chinese and Western dishes I ever had were at WEIL Hotel. Yuk Sou Hin is popular for their signature Smoked Duck with Lychee Wood and dim sum, while The Deck Gastro Bar is a rooftop bar to enjoy great food and cocktails with an awesome night view the city. Not to mention, live band too.

Rojak Penang (Pasembor) & Cendol Penang @ Taman Megah

Taman Megah Rojak Cendol Truck

For those who frequently travel along LDP, you should notice a rojak and cendol truck parked at the side of the road leading into Taman Megah.
Judging by the number of customers I have seen camping there, its popularity can certainly match Cendol & Rojak Mustaffa in Section 17. Despite knowing its existence for years, it was only until the last weekend that we decided to give it a try.

Taman Megah Rojak

I think rojak (or what we call pasembur in Penang) is not complete without sambal sotong. Since it only costs an additional RM1 for the sotong, why not?
The rojak sauce is undoubtedly good with a nice nutty aroma and I like that the sauce is not overly sweet. A standard serving of the rojak (RM5), with or without the extra toppings comes with all the ingredients you expect including the quintessential coconut fritters.

Cendol Taman Megah
Penang Cendol Taman Megah

As for cendol, I think we have been spoilt by the one we had at Nyonya Cendol Cafe in Summit USJ. Because of that, a lot of cendol just don’t quite hit the mark for us anymore. Nevertheless, the cendol here is value for money (big bowl with plenty of ingredients) and still a refreshing treat to enjoy in a hot afternoon, albeit a tad watery for my preference.

Kanul Cendol @ Taman Danau Niaga, Setapak

We were in Setapak yesterday and saw a cendol stall that had people queuing for it. Curiosity got the best of us so we put aside what we were supposed to do and joined the queue to check it out.

Kanul Cendol Setapak

We also noticed that the majority of the customers are students who are staying in the many condominiums nearby.

Kanul Cendol Bike Setapak

While waiting, I had a chat with the boss (Kanul) and found that he actually took over his father’s business not too long ago.
Although he has been selling cendol at the current location for only a month, he already managed to build a large base of customers. Because of that, his cendol usually sells out within 3 to 4 hours – earlier if the weather is hot.

Kanul Cendol Gula Melaka Setapak
Setapak Kanul Cendol
Kanul Cendol Coconut Milk Setapak

All the ingredients Kanul uses for his cendol are homemade except for the sweet corn which is canned. Besides having excellent customer service, he is also not stingy with the toppings.
For RM3, you receive a huge packet filled with full spoonfuls of sweet corn, red bean, pulut, three scoops of gula melaka and generous amount of cendol. If you are taking away for later consumption, ask for ‘ikat mati’. Otherwise, ask for ‘ikat tepi’ so you can drink it immediately.

Setapak Cendol

If you ask me, I think his cendol is delicious. It had a right balance of gula melaka and santan for a rich, sweet and refreshing flavor. The texture of the shaved ice was light and fine so you rarely get those annoying bits when taking a sip. No wonder he is gaining popularity with the local community so quickly.

Setapak Cendol Stall

Before we left, I asked Kanul what are his next plans. His answer was to be able to sell rojak as well to complement his business. I wish him and the other cendol men out there all the very best for the future.

Durian Cendol @ Mel’s Corner, Batu Caves

We are approaching the bumper period (when the supply is high) for the current durian season, so you will see a gradual decline in the prices. Although Musang King’s price has dropped from RM120/kg to RM/75 from the week before, it’s still expensive.

Durian Cendol Mel's Corner
Durian Cendol Durian Tembaga Mel's Corner

Now if you want to enjoy durian without having to spend a fortune, durian cendol will be your answer. And no, you don’t need to travel to Shah Alam, as it’s also available at Mel’s Corner in Batu Caves.

Durian on Cendol
Durian Cendol Preparation
Durian Cendol Batu Caves Mel's Corner

Mel’s Corner’s durian cendol is RM20 for a big bowl and it comes with two pulps of local durian tembaga and ice cream with all the usual toppings. They don’t use any processed durian paste or artificial flavoring to enhance the durian flavor in the cendol.
Whatever you taste is directly from the durian pulps and the ones we had were bitter sweet and honestly quite wonderful. That said, do note that you may get a different type of durian and the price will change accordingly to the durian season.

Mel's Corner Durian Cendol Batu Caves

This is the crowd in the weekends. Don’t be discouraged though, as service is relatively fast especially if you are taking away. For those who plan to ‘makan sini’, don’t bother to queue. You will need to secure a table first then only place your order.

Mel's Corner Durian Cendol Durian Shake Roti John

Besides durian cendol, durian shake, ABC durian and Roti John are also available.

Mel's Corner Durian Shake

The durian shake is RM7, ice blended with 100% durian flesh, gula melaka and ice cream then topped with chocolate candies. The durian flavor is really strong in this one and the shake shake is rich and creamy in taste. I thought the chocolate candies were unnecessary and didn’t add anything to it.

Mel's Corner Roti John

Their Roti John was alright, not the best I have had but surely satisfying enough as a snack while waiting for the cendol to arrive.

Mel’s Corner is open till midnight too, perfect when you have sudden pangs of craving for durian or supper. To know more about this place, check out the video we made above.

Kaniappan Cendol @ Bukit Tinggi Cendol Street, Klang

The last time we went to Bukit Tinggi for tong yuen, we arrived too early so the stall was not open yet. Not wanting to leave empty handed, we opened up Foursquare and searched for alternatives in the area.

A lot of cendol recommendations appeared and peculiarly, all of them seemed to be gathered at the same place. Our curiosity got the better of us and we drove there immediately.

Bukit Tinggi Cendol Street

In hindsight, missing the tong yuen was a blessing in disguise. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have discovered this awesome grubbing spot. Also known as ‘cendol stret’, it’s basically a short stretch of street lined up with food trucks and various stalls selling mainly cendol, rojak, drinks and snacks.

Kaniappan Cendol Truck Bukit Tinggi Klang

Uncle Kaniappan Cendol

After surveying the available options, we picked Kaniappan’s Cendol because it looked the most appealing. Based on our conversation with uncle, we understood that he was the first to set up his cendol and rojak stall here 13 years ago. When asked if the other trucks are his competitors, he denied it and said they are all friends.

Cendol Klang Bukit Tinggi

We had absolutely no idea how much the cendol would cost, so we were pleasantly surprised to know that it was only RM1.80 a bowl. But if you ask me, the best thing about the cendol is not the cheap price. Rather, it was the taste that really got us.

Cendol with Grass Jelly Gula Melaka

Usually I will rave about the gula melaka, but I feel that the main factor that sets uncle Kaniappan’s cendol apart is the touch of salt he added into the coconut milk. That gives his already delicious cendol a layer of savory flavor. It’s the type of cendol you can drink non stop without feeling ‘jelak’.

ABC Kaniappan Klang Cendol Street

We also tried his ABC (RM2.20) but thought it was just alright. Cendol is definitely the real star here. If you are unsure of which truck to go to, just look for the one manned by an uncle wearing a hat.

Some of you may have noticed that I have been sharing a lot of video contents from MyMakanTV. It is in fact a new social media venture me and my wife SL have been working hard on in the last 2 months.

Here’s our latest project I would like to share with you, which would not have been made possible if not for the support of Mamee Jonker House. I am very thankful to Mamee Jonker House for agreeing to be a sponsor and placed such high trust in us to produce this Melaka Halal Food Guide.
The truth is, halal food in Melaka is under-reported and there are many eateries that are not receiving the recognition they deserve. So in this food guide we wish to present a different side to Melaka food and hope that you will find it useful in your upcoming makan trip to Melaka.

Melaka Halal Food Guide

In this guide, you will find more than 40 places which we have personally visited and handpicked for your reference. The choices presented should be more than enough for you to fuel at least 3 to 4 separate food hunting trips.
If I had to choose, my personal favorites are: Mee Kari Sungai Putat, Warung Hijau, Mee Udang Kak Rose, Kuih Keria Antarabangsa, Nasi Ayam Baba, Awang Roti Canai, Satay Kampung Jawa, Seri Erra Roti John, D24 Ice Cream and Mango Float Royale.

**I apologize for having to watermark the list. But I have to do it because my blog and MyMakanTV’s contents are being heavily plagiarized recently.

Durian & Mango Cendol @ Warisan Kak Aini, Wangsa Maju

Durian-Cendol-Warisan-Kak-Aini-KL

When Rojak & Cendol Shah Alam came up with the idea of using real durian pulps in their durian cendol, it created a frenzy on the internet.
People really took on the idea and for the following weeks, the stall was extremely busy with queues of customers. As you would have expected, many other cendol stalls in the country followed suit later.

Warisan-Kak-Aini-Preparing-Cendol

Cue a year later, there are dozens of places in Klang Valley where you can get this kind of durian cendol. We have not been able to try every single one of them, but so far, Warisan Kak Aini is our favorite.

Warisan-Kak-Aini-Chendul-Durian

D24 durian is the primary choice for Kak Aini and she does not use the more expensive variants such as Musang King. And if she runs out of stock for D24 durian, durian kampung is used as a substitute.

Warisan-Kak-Aini-D24-Durian

They rarely use durians from Thailand unless the local ones are totally unavailable. That said, you are free to opt for durian kampung, in which you get two durian pulps instead of one for the same price of RM10.

Warisan-Kak-Aini-Chendul-Durgga

Besides durian, mango is also a popular option here, not to mention more affordable. The Chendul Mangga is RM6 a bowl and that’s a reasonable price considering the portion and amount of diced mango that goes into it.
For those who don’t always come to Wangsa Maju, the Chendul DurGga @ RM17 is what you should try. It’s basically a combination of DURian and manGGA, hence the name.

Durian-Cendol-KL

It’s undeniable that Kak Aini’s cendol looks delicious because of the colorful toppings. But that’s only part of the reason why we like it.
Despite not having the fluffiest shaved ice, richest Gula Melaka or the creamiest santan, her cendol wins in striking a perfect balance of flavor. The sweetness is just right without being cloying as not to inhibit the flavors of other ingredients present in the cendol.

Pulut-Durian-Warisan-Kak-Aini

Warisan Kak Aini also serves Pulut Durian/Mangga, Laksa Sarang and Rojak – but we were too stuffed to try the latter two. From what we heard, they are great, as Kak Aini used to be a chef before starting this business.

Authentic Nyonya Cendol @ Mdm Kiow Cendol, Melaka

It’s an open secret that Aunty Koh makes the best Nyonya cendol in Melaka, and probably in Malaysia too. If you managed to try her cendol before then count yourself lucky, because word is that her stall has remained closed for the last couple of weeks. That’s always a sign that she might be closing up for good.

Mdm-Kiow-Cendol-Bukit-Rambai-Melaka

So for those who came all the way out of town only to find her stall closed, fret not, as there’s an alternative just further down the road – Mdm Kiow Cendol.

Like Aunty Koh, Mdm Kiow Cendol is also only open during the weekends and they are doing it out of passion and to make some extra income. With the exception of coconut milk and red bean, every other ingredient used in their Nyonya cendol is homemade.
You will notice their Gula Melaka is extra gooey while the cendol is softer, has a deeper green and does not resemble those commercially-produced ones.

The first thing that hits your senses when you take a sip of the cendol (RM4) is the fragrance of Gula Melaka. The taste is so pure and ‘kao’ that the experience is almost like drinking a melted coconut candy, a concentrated one that is. If you like your cendol with extreme Gula Melaka taste, you will surely love this.
Now for those who have tasted Aunty Koh’s cendol, you must be wondering how it sizes up with Mdm Kiow’s. Well, Mdm Kiow’s Gula Melaka is richer and their homemade cendol is definitely more superior. But when it comes to the ‘santan’ (coconut milk), Aunty Koh wins hands down because she grates the coconut herself, and that actually makes a big difference in terms of aroma.

While you are here you should also try some of their homemade Nyonya kuih. Some of the more popular items include pai tee (recommended!), apam berkuah durian, pisang goreng and pulut tai tai. Even the nangka madu sold here are harvested from their backyard garden.

Melaka has no shortage of stalls or cafes that serve cendol. But if you are looking for one that offers the best overall experience, it has got to be Cendol Kampung Hulu. This unique cendol operation can be found behind a barber shop-cum-restaurant establishment along the Melaka River.

Here, customers are able to have their cendol while enjoying the view in an al fresco setting. It’s pretty cool to be honest.

Another thing that makes Cendol Kampung Hulu stand out from the common cendol stalls is the quality of their shaved ice. They have invested in a Korean ice shaver machine which produces a fluffy and snow like texture for their shaved ice. Because of that, it’s also called Cendol Bingsu.

Cendol Kampung Hulu also uses a couple homemade ingredients such as frozen coconut milk (for the Bingsu) and coconut ice cream. And besides the usual toppings you get in a cendol, they also offer a variety of fruit add ons, albeit some of them are canned. The selection include mango, dragon fruit, pineapple, longan and even durian.

A standard serving (with ice cream) is RM5 and you can opt for as many additional fruit toppings you want. Every scoop is chargeable at RM1. For example, the cendol above will cost RM7 because of additional mango cubes and longan.

All in all, the cendol was enjoyable mainly because of the Bingsu texture. We also feel that the price is reasonable considering the large portion size (1 bowl can actually be shared by two) and the prettier-than-usual presentation. The Melaka River view was only the cherry on the top.
